Alexander McCall Smith's first four books in his bestselling The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series (featuring Mma Precious Ramotswe, an African woman who sets up her own detective agency in Botswana) now have a combined 2.3 million copies in print. The first volume, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, reached one million copies in print in its Vintage/Anchor editions; the trade paperback was on our bestseller charts for 52 weeks. The fourth book, The Kalahari Typing School for Men, was just released in trade paper and hits the chart in the #9 spot. First printing was 180,000 and three subsequent printings (two for 20,000 and one for 25,000) bring the in-print total to 245,000. The fifth in the series, The Full Cupboard of Life, will be published by Pantheon April 20 with a 130,000 printing. Smith is coming to the states (he lives in Scotland) in mid-April for a 15-day/14-city/18-event whirlwind tour. Also, film rights for the series have been bought by Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack.
