Gen. Janis Karpinski, who was the first woman flag officer to serve in a combat zone (in Desert Storm) and became a controversial figure in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq, is writing a memoir about her military life, which Miramax's Jonathan Burnham just bought for world rights. He worked directly with the general herself, who said she didn't want to wait to leave the army before telling her story, as she wants to "level the field for women in the military." She will describe how she was one of the first women to be admitted to West Point, in 1977, and encountered discrimination from the start. Later, she will devote much of the book to describing the chaotic situation she found in Iraq, including information about the actions of specific colleagues and civilian officials in the Abu Ghraib affair. There's no title yet for the book, which will be published next June.
