Just below the nonfiction hardcover top 15 is The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker by Robert Mankoff, weighing in at 9.1 pounds. This hefty 656-page collection includes 2,004 of the best cartoons published in theNew Yorker over the past 80 years plus a double CD set with all 68,647 cartoons ever published in the magazine, searchable by publication year or by cartoonist's name. The bestseller is Black Dog & Leventhal's fastest book out of the gate ever. First printing was 180,000 copies, followed by two additional printings of 15,000 each, making for 210,000 copies. BD&L has spent more than $200,000 so far on marketing the book, including a substantial author tour that took Mankoff (and some of his fellow cartoonists) to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.; the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco; and the Chicago Public Library, among other places. The publisher will be continuing to promote the book and tour the author throughout next year (the 80th anniversary of the New Yorker) with a special focus on events at independent bookstores nationwide (the book is #11 on the Book Sense National Bestseller list for the week ending December 12). Mankoff will be going to about 15 cities, and the publisher is hoping that retailers will sponsor off-site events at local colleges, museums or libraries where Mankoff can do his show, which includes slides covering the history of humor in this country.
