A biography of the new Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, wrtten by Newsweek chief of correspondents Marcus Mabry, was bought on a preempt for a rather unlikely house, Rodale, by executive editor Leigh Haber. It's called Twice as Good: The Souls of Condoleezza Rice and will trace Rice's fierce drive to succeed, from her Alabama childhood through her academic and business career to her White House service in the first Bush administration. Mabry's book will examine not only her philosophy and its impact, but also the equivocal status she enjoys in the black community as a result of her powerful position. Haber bought North American rights from Charlotte Sheedy and will publish in less than two years.
