The spring 2006 season is a big one for children's books—it has the greatest number of titles with a first printing of 100,000 copies or more since we started keeping track, back in spring 2004.

Lilly's Big Day by Kevin Henkes is the highly anticipated sequel to Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, and its first printing of 500,000 copies shows that its publisher, Greenwillow, is expecting plenty of Lilly fans to scoop the book up. Another feisty heroine, Olivia, returns in Ian Falconer's Olivia Forms a Band (Atheneum, 400,000). Lane Smith gives the nation's forefathers his own distinctive spin in John, Paul, George and Ben (Hyperion, 250,000). Artemis Fowl creator Eoin Colfer has Half-Moon Investigations (Hyperion/ Miramax, 175,000), and James Patterson offers his second book in his Maximum Ride series, School's Out—Forever (Little, Brown, 450,000). Plenty of other books, as you'll see, are getting the star treatment, and only time will tell if publishers have predicted the public's interest correctly.
