The total number of books published in India increased 35.1% between 1997 and 2004, to 77,537, according to statistics released by the Federation of Indian Publishers. The most popular language for books remained Hindi, which accounted for about 27% of all books published, but the number of English-language books increased the fastest in the seven-year period, rising 50%. In all, the FIP tracked book output in 18 different languages.
