A lot has happened in America over the past couple of years. Beginning with war and rumors of more war, then the sub-prime mortgage crisis and now a looming recession, the national climate has grown cloudy. No surprise, then, that title output for spring religion/spirituality books reflects a more constrained approach, with many topics producing fewer titles than in recent seasons. The exceptions seem to be books on Catholicism—as robustly published as ever—and on social issues like the environment and economic inequality, but above all, in this crucial election year, on politics. This season's titles take a practical approach, aiming to equip people of faith to define and vote their values. (We will treat the issue in depth in the February 25 Religion Update, our quarterly supplement to PW.)

As we saw last fall, upcoming books seeking to counter “the new atheism” outnumber books by atheists themselves (this topic also is covered in our Feb. 25 issue). One notable exception is Lewis Black's Me of Little Faith, coming in June from Riverhead. The chronically enraged comic will be the featured performer at this year's BEA, and his humorous attack on religion might help keep the debate between believers and debunkers boiling.
