Rich Kallman, executive v-p of New Jersey—based wholesaler Bookazine, substantiated several of the holiday trends mentioned by booksellers. “Price point was a factor, as many higher-priced books that we usually sell well never did take off,” Kallman said. Price sensitivity affected children's books as well; Bookazine children's expert Heather Doss noted that the average price for her top 100 titles was below $10, which translated into more sales of paperbacks than hardcovers. And like everyone else, Bookazine could have sold more copies of the Twilight titles. On the adult side, Bookazine's top title was Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers.
