Borders May Close More Stores
The Borders creditors' committee asked the Gores Group to revise its bid for the retailer, and Borders filed to possibly close up to 51 of its most profitable stores or stores with under-market leases starting June 21. Among the outlets are stores in downtown Boston; Phoenix, Ariz.; Arlington, Tex.; and three in New York City.

Macmillan Picks Raincoast
Following the bankruptcy of H.B. Fenn, Macmillan has picked Vancouver's Raincoast Book Distribution to handle Canadian sales and fulfillment for its titles to the independent bookstore, library, and specialty markets as well as for Costco Canada. Macmillan will directly sell to Indigo, Amazon, and ID wholesalers. FSG will continue to be sold by Douglas & McIntyre in Canada.

Ga. State Univ. E-reserves Case
Presiding over the Georgia State University e-reserves case, Judge Orinda Evans will likely decide the case on a single claim of "indirect liability" after dismissing publishers' claim of contributory infringement. The ruling is subject to appeal.

Skywriter, McGuirk Ink Mobile deal
Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group has inked an exclusive deal with popular children's author/illustrator Leslie McGuirk to be the first resident author for its Skyreader mobile app development platform. McGuirk will work with the company to create original interactive e-book titles for the iPad in addition to transforming her own titles into interactive digital works for the iOS platform.

ABDO to Offer Marvel E-comicsEducational publisher ABDO will
license and offer e-book versions of Marvel comic books beginning in the fall 2011 school year. The publisher is also offering a series of free downloadable teacher guides focused on using comic books for vocabulary building. The guides are based on comics licensed from Marvel and Dark Horse.

Aletheia Cuts B&N Stake
In an SEC filing, Aletheia Research and Management disclosed that it had cut its stake in Barnes & Noble to 5.2 million shares, or 8.65% of the company, from the 10.59% stake it held in April. Aletheia is B&N's third largest shareholder after chairman Len Riggio and outside investor Ron Burkle.

Cinram Looks To Mobile Content
Multimedia producer Cinram International is expanding into e-publishing and enhanced book app market, working through the expanded Cinram Digital Media Group and its subsidiary 1K Studios, which specializes in creating enhanced content and mobile devices. 1K Studios worked with Penguin Books to create the "amplified edition" of Ken Follett's novel Pillars of the Earth.

Open Letter Goes Digital
Open Letter Press, which publishes literature in translation, has made a number of its books available digitally, in multiple formats, for the first time. The nonprofit press will make nine titles available as e-books. To promote the e-books, the press is discounting each book to $4.99 until June 30.

Sales Drop at Educational Development
Sales at Educational Development Corp. fell to $27.2 million in the fiscal year ended February 28, from $28.7 million in fiscal 2010. Earnings declined to $1.2 million, from $1.9 million. The sales decline came in EDC's Usborne Books and More division, where sales fell to $17.4 million, from $19.2 million. Sales in the publishing division rose 3.4%, to $9.8 million.

Gantec Launches eBooks2go
Gantec Publishing Solutions has launched eBooks2go.net, an online platform for data conversion and digital distribution aimed at both publishers and individual authors. To promote eBooks2go.net, GPS is offering new clients free services to convert .pdfs to EPub until September 30.

RH Canada Debuts New Cooking Imprint
Robert McCullough will head a new and as yet unnamed imprint at Random House Canada dedicated to food and lifestyle books. McCullough, who will start at RH on July 11, has been at Whitecap Books for 21 years and published a range of famous chefs while there.
