E-books accounted for more than 20% of spending in three major fiction categories in 2012, according to Bowker’s 2013 U.S. Book Consumer Demographics & Buying Behaviors Annual Review. They had the deepest penetration in the romance category, where the format accounted for 25% of spending. E-books represented 24% of spending in the mystery/detective segment and 22% in the science fiction segment. In terms of units, e-books accounted for more than one-third of copies sold in 2012 in those three categories and more than 20% of units sold in the espionage/thriller and general fiction categories. Biography/autobiography was the only major nonfiction category in which e-books accounted for at least 20% of units sold. The complete report is now available for $999.
