Unit sales of print books rose 9% in the week ended July 20, 2014, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. For the second consecutive week, sales through the retail & club channel rose 9%; retail & club is up 2% for the year-to-date. In a rare event this year, all four major print book categories posted a sales increase in week 29—even adult fiction. Units in adult fiction rose 1%, driven by three strong debuts: The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness was the top-selling hardcover adult fiction title in the week, selling over 51,000 copies, while another new hardcover, Daniel Silva’s The Heist, came in second, with over 44,000 units sold in its first week. The mass market paperback edition of Debbie Macomber’s Rose Harbor in Bloom ranked at #3, selling over 32,000 copies. Even with the gains in the week, unit sales of adult fiction were down 12% through July 20, 2014, compared to the same period in 2013. No new titles were needed to boost sales in juvenile fiction, as Veronica Roth’s Four stayed in the top spot, racking up over 64,000 copies sold in its second week on sale. John Green’s books were in the next three places on the juvenile fiction list, combining to sell approximately 109,000 copies in week 29 at BookScan outlets.
