Citadel of the Fallen

J.R. Konkol. Black Rose Writing, $19.95 trade paper (284p) ISBN 978-1-68433-546-6

Konkol’s debut and Rebirth of the Fallen series launch offers a glimpse into a bleak but arresting world where only three human-controlled cities remain after the rest have fallen to demons. Chief among the human holdouts is the Citadel, home to a group of young friends: Attia, who’s training to be a ranger; Liam, who will be a warrior; Liam’s brother, Conner, a healer; and orphaned Malcolm, who discovers that his body plays host to a second soul that wields great power and knowledge. All four are called to defend the Citadel against the Black Tide, an annual migration of ravenous giant ants, which has mysteriously diverted toward the Citadel. While the demonic threats often feel like caricatures, the book’s best moments are found in Konkol’s portrayal of the tight bonds of friendships and family. Though the supernatural story line is predictable, the characters’ struggles with their youth and inexperience in the face of a gathering darkness will draw readers in. This dystopian adventure will appeal to adult and young adult readers alike. Agent: Randi Davis, Davis Literary. (Oct.)
