The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art has announced the recipients of its 2017 Carle Honors.
Ed Young was named the Artist Honoree. Born in China, Young moved the U.S. as a young man, initially to study architecture. Young is the author and illustrator of Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China (Philomel, 1990), for which he received the Caldecott Medal, and most recently The Cat from Hunger Mountain (Philomel, 2016).
Dr. John Y. Cole was chosen as the Angel Honoree for his work as historian at the Library of Congress, leading such literacy initiatives as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature program, launched in 2008, and the opening of the Young Readers Center in 2009.
Anthea Bell was chosen as the Bridge Honoree for her pioneering work as a literary translator. Bell has translated into English such works as Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytales, the Inkworld trilogy by Cornelia Funke, the Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier, Austerlitz by W.G. Sebald, and the French Asterix comics.
Bank Street Writers Lab, represented by Dr. Cynthia Weill, director of the Center for Children’s Literature, was chosen as the Mentor Honoree. The award recognizes the Writers Lab’s support of children’s book authors and illustrators since its founding in 1937.
The 12th Annual Carle Honors will be awarded in New York City on Thursday, September 28, with author Jack Gantos serving as presenter. For more information, see the Carle Museum's website.
