The National Book Foundation has announced its longlists for the 2017 National Book Awards. The five finalists in each category will be named on October 4, and the winner will be announced at a ceremony in New York City on November 15.

The three longlists for the adult awards are as follows:

Publishers submitted a total of 245 books for the 2017 National Book Award for Poetry. The judges for poetry are Nick Flynn, Jane Mead, Gregory Pardlo, Richard Siken, and chair Monica Youn.

A total of 553 books were submitted for the 2017 National Book Award for Nonfiction. The judges for nonfiction are Steve Bercu, Jeff Chang, Ruth Franklin, chair Paula J. Giddings, and Valeria Luiselli.

For the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction, publishers submitted a total of 394 books. The judges for fiction are Alexander Chee, Dave Eggers, Annie Philbrick, Karolina Waclawiak, and chair Jacqueline Woodson.
