Alex Segura, previously co-president of Archie Comics, has been named senior v-p of sales and marketing at the Oni-Lion Forge Publishing Group, an independent comics publishing house based in Portland, Ore. Segura, who will start May 24, will be responsible for Oni-Lion Forge publicity, marketing and sales efforts across all of the company’s operations channels.

“While it’s been an amazing honor and privilege to call Riverdale my professional and creative home for over a decade, when Oni-Lion Forge approached me with this opportunity, I couldn’t say no,” said Segura in a statement. “Getting the chance to help amplify the ever-expanding, talented, and diverse voices at Oni is a great fit.” Oni-Lion Forge is a relatively new publishing entity formed after the merger of startup comics house Lion Forge Comics and indie comics house Oni Press in 2019.

Segura brings nearly 20 years of experience in comics publishing including about 10 years at Archie Comics during separate stints. He has worked for Archie for the last seven years, and has been co-president of Archie Comics since 2017. He first joined Archie in 2009 as v-p, director of sales and marketing from 2009-2012, and returned again in 2013 as senior v-p of publicity, marketing, and editor of Archie’s Dark Circle Comics imprint. In between stints as Archie, Segura worked in managerial and executive positions at DC Comics (twice).

While at Archie, Segura has been credited with expanding the publicity around the venerable brand and its characters, and working to launch new publishing and media partnerships with such companies as Scholastic, Comixology, Spotify, Webtoon and others. Segura has also worked in support of Archie’s efforts to redesign and rebrand its popular characters for a new generation of readers, helping to bring in such writers and artists as Fiona Staples, Francesco Francavilla, Kelly Thompson, Mariko Tamaki, Marguerite Bennett, Audrey Mok, Veronica Fish, and Chip Zdarsky.

Segura is also a noted crime and mystery novelist (his next novel Secret Identity will be published by Flatiron Books in 2022). He is the author of the Peter Fernandez Miami Mystery series, in addition to writing a variety of comics series for Archie and other publishers.

Oni-Lion Forge publisher James Lucas Jones said that “Alex brings experience, talent, and charisma unmatched in comics publishing. His track record of smart decision-making is a matter of public record and his many long relationships across virtually all vectors of our business gives him a uniquely advantageous position in our industry.”
