|Georgetown University Press, a growing scholarly publisher, seeks an experienced professional to serve as a senior member of the press management team. This individual will be responsible for creating and executing the marketing and sales strategies of the press, developing plans to promote and sell 40 or more new print and digital titles annually and an active backlist as well as three journals. |
The marketing and sales director (MSD) oversees a staff and interns and all functions of the department, including publicity, promotions, advertising, direct mail, exhibits, electronic marketing and social media, and websites. The MSD serves as the main link between the press and its domestic and international distributors and sales representatives, and is responsible for forecasting and budgeting sales and revenue and all marketing expenses. The MSD is also responsible for generating consistent sales and revenue growth in both print and digital markets, and providing a deep level of sales analysis.
The MSD must be able to manage a talented staff and work in a highly collaborative and communicative environment. The MSD must also be able to think strategically about the rapidly evolving role of scholarly publishing and embrace digital publishing and technology, and must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Candidates should have at least 10 years of related experience in a marketing and/or sales department at a scholarly, professional, or commercial publisher. The ideal candidate will have experience in marketing, promotion, special sales, sales analysis, forecasting, budgeting, and staff management, and a proven track record of growth in both print and digital markets.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Acrobat Pro, and Photoshop required; experience with e-commerce, ONIX, social media, journals, and databases (such as FileMakerPro) preferred; foreign language skills and experience with ancillary digital products a plus. Some travel and attendance at exhibits required.
We offer a competitive salary and excellent benefits, with offices located in the heart of Georgetown in Washington, DC. While employees have flexible hours, telecommuting is not available for this position.
