The Acquisitions Editor is responsible for soliciting, recommending, acquiring and developing authors of fiction in genres such as thrillers, mysteries, suspense, and action-adventure and narrative nonfiction for a to-be-named trade imprint of Harlequin, and ensuring that the strategic direction will support the growth of the imprint. The Acquisitions Editor is a key representative for the imprint and must work closely with numerous internal departments such as Editorial, North American Marketing and Digital, Sales, Publicity, Overseas, Legal, Art, Production and Finance to ensure effective communication and planning within and across departments. He/she must have a strong eye for commercial fiction; have strong knowledge of consumer book buying practices, industry trends, and solid competitive insight. He/she must have excellent editorial skills, from manuscript revision to line editing to copy writing. Key imprint deliverables are bringing fiction and nonfiction acquisition expertise to the imprint, including agent and author contacts, strong acquisition/contract negotiating and editorial skills; implementing strategic author build practices, and using innovative and effective approaches to market a book internally and across departments.

• With the Editorial Director, formulates and executes a distinct and salable vision for the imprint, ensures all content delivers, and develops an understanding of the imprint’s health.
• Solicits fiction and nonfiction from agents and from new and existing writers; reads and recommends, with the goal of successful acquisition/negotiation within the confines of budget.
• Acquires and develops authors in accordance with imprint’s vision. Responsible for implementing author growth plans.
• Fosters current agent contacts and develops relationships with new agents, recruits new talent and draws competitive talent.
• Attends various writers’ conferences as company representative to make further inroads into the genre.
• Responsible for developing and implementing the company’s acquisition and build strategies, as well as contributing innovative ideas in this process. Actively participates in the vision team process with Art and Marketing to create effective packaging.

• 3 or more years’ experience as an acquisitions editor or associate editor
• Recent experience working with noteworthy authors
• A University degree
• Solid history of finding, editing and cultivating key authors
• Demonstrated ability in recognizing new talent with strong commercial potential
• Broad list of agent contacts
• Strong contract negotiation skills, along with knowledge/understanding of standard publishing contracts and P&Ls
• Strong writing skills
• Creativity, flexibility and initiative
