Insight Editions is seeking a Senior Editor in its San Rafael, California office to acquire, edit, and project edit titles. Insight Editions is a multifaceted multimedia publishing company recognized throughout the industry as a premier content developer for print, mobile, and digital entertainment. Working with our creative partners in film, television, art, sports, and gaming, in addition to working with authors, photographers, directors, actors, and other artists, this team member will help create some of the most beautiful and dynamic publications and standards-setting digital entertainment.

Scope:
The Senior Editor acquires and edits new projects for our publishing program and develops these titles as they make their way through the manuscript, design, and production processes, championing each project from start to finish and taking responsibility for the editorial quality and integrity of each work. This position is designed to be independent and collaborative, requiring an individual who is experienced, ambitious, flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work with and coordinate teams. The Senior Editor drives creative product development, giving form to the publishing program’s award-winning industry-leading publications.

The books produced by Insight Editions are heavily illustrated and often push the boundaries of format in terms of scope, materials, size, ancillary elements, and design. For this reason, an ideal candidate would have experience working with text as well as illustrative elements such as art, photography, movie images, computer graphics, comics, drawings, paintings, concept art, and other materials.

Duties:

• Research and develop publishing leads
o Dialogue with agents, authors, licensors, photographers, and other talent
o Evaluate and respond to submissions
o Participate in editorial board meetings

• Acquire new titles
o Conceptualize potential projects
o Devise preliminary budgets for projects and make financial assessments
o Negotiate deals

• Sponsor and oversee projects
o Champion titles through the development and production processes
o Continue to manage the creative dialogue with agents, authors, licensors, and other creative stakeholders (as appropriate) as a project moves into production
o Work as a project editor and developmental editor
o Oversee freelance project editors, editors, writers, photo researchers, copyeditors, and other contributors
o Enforce production schedules

• Coordinate marketing of sponsored titles with the Sales & Marketing departments
o Develop initial marketing leads
o Strategize with marketing and special sales to create sales opportunities
o Write catalog and title information copy

Requirements:

• At least six years of editorial experience in the book publishing industry
• The ability to map out and see through a project from start to finish
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
• Proficiency with Word, Excel, Filemaker, and other book publishing tools and programs
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite or other art and photo viewing programs
• An understanding of editorial budgets and P&L formulas
• Interest in movies, television series, gaming, art, photography, design, environmental issues, and Eastern spirituality, reflective of Insight Editions’ imprints (Insight Editions, Earth Aware Editions, and Mandala Publishing)
