Description | A small, dynamic, and multi-award-winning publisher, the South Dakota State Historical Society Press seeks a forward-looking individual to be a part of its acquisitions team, with special responsibility for manuscript evaluation and editing and book production, including ebooks. The responsibilities of the position include: critical evaluation of book proposals and manuscripts; management of book proposals and manuscripts during the peer-review process; contract negotiation with authors, agents, and service providers; structural and copy editing of book manuscripts; research and fact checking; management of issues related to copyright and distribution law; all facets of book production, including coordination of designers, printers, and other industry service-providers. The associate editor reports to the Director of the Press and serves on the team that sets press policies and publishing directions. The successful candidate will have a minimum of a four-year degree in history, American studies, English or related field from an accredited university, as well as two years of editorial experience, preferably in book or journal publishing. A commitment to excellence in writing and editing, a working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style and copyright law, and the ability to work and interact with a diverse group of coworkers, authors, agents, and outside service-providers are essential. Knowledge of trends in digital publishing, including XML and ePub standards and practices, and a vision for its application in scholarly and trade publishing are preferred.
