The University of Alabama Press seeks a creative and highly motivated Managing Editor to be a member of its management team, participating in long- and short-term planning for the Press while supervising a department of three editors. This position is responsible for scheduling and supervising the copyediting and proofreading of approximately 50 -60 new manuscripts and 15 ? 25 reprints per year. This position is responsible for developing and monitoring the department budget.

Required minimum qualifications for the position include a bachelor's degree in English, the humanities, or a related discipline, and three years of book editing experience with an academic or specialized non-profit publisher. We are open to an equivalent combination of education and experience in which comparable skills and abilities have been attained. Knowledge of electronic manuscript preparation and editing and a mastery of standard usage and style manuals are required, as is knowledge of current book-making technologies. Excellent negotiation and communication skills are necessary, as are editing, writing, problem solving, and organizational skills. A demonstrated ability to manage a department of professionals is strongly preferred.
