ASCD is looking for an Associate Publisher to direct the acquisition and development of print and digital content for books, short-format publications, e-books, hybrid (print + digital) publications, and new formats for electronic mobile devices. You will have direct responsibility for ensuring that these products meet member and customer needs and are high-quality, profitable, and sufficient to meet or exceed annual revenue targets. You will have leadership responsibility in the Association’s strategic content planning efforts and broad authority regarding decisions about what topics and potential content to pursue and the formats in which content will be published.

In this role, the ideal candidate will:
• Support the work of the Publisher in meeting revenue goals and conceptualizing products and product lines that meet the needs of target audiences. Lead special projects for the Publisher as assigned and represent the Publisher when Publisher cannot be present.
• Participate in long-range strategic planning for the Content Acquisitions unit, the Publishing unit, the Work Group, and the Association.
• Direct the acquisition and development of content for at least 30 books and 18 short-format publications per year, which also flows into the pipeline for other revenue-generating programs, products, and services.
• Lead content strategy efforts across the organization and spearhead the transition to acquiring and developing hybrid products (print + digital), enhanced e-books, and new formats for mobile electronic devices.
• Ensure that projects acquired and developed, including member benefits, are appropriate for ASCD’s audience, written to high standards, and completed within a specified time frame and budget.
• Oversee the evaluation of content proposals and bring in high-level authors and partners to develop new programs, products, services, and applications.
• Lead effort to assess new and potential content at the front end for use in a variety of products in different formats and to disaggregate and repurpose existing content across the Association to generate revenue and meet diverse customer needs.
• Collaborate with Marketing and Customer Engagement to monitor and analyze competition, trends, market research, and customer feedback.
• Supervise development of Profit & Loss estimates and contract negotiations, and review contracts with Publisher for approval.
• Lead and participate on internal cross-unit teams, attend external conferences and education meetings to gather strategic information and generate ideas for new products, content providers, and markets.
• Manage a staff of acquisitions editors and a shared project coordinator.
• Develop and monitor unit budget, gather and analyze key data, set and monitor unit goals, initiate continuous improvement efforts, and report on progress and results.

Qualified candidates must have 10 years’ of experience in publishing, with at least 4 years in an acquisitions/content development role in education publishing with broad decision-making authority and budgetary responsibility. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree, must have in-depth knowledge of trends, issues, experts, and customer needs in K–12 education; extensive knowledge of copyright law, publishing contracts, and publishing processes and procedures; and deep knowledge of print and digital product conceptualization and development practices, editing and writing standards, author management, project budgeting (including Profit &Loss estimates for print, digital, and hybrid products), and marketing. Experience working at a membership association on member benefits and experience as a teacher, administrator, leader, or professional development specialist is highly desirable.
