The University of Alabama Press (UAP) seeks a creative and highly motivated marketing professional to be responsible for the marketing, promotion, and publicity activities that support the sale of UAP books.
The Marketing Coordinator is responsible for organizing electronic marketing efforts, exhibits, awards, and advertising efforts for UAP titles including creating and implementing marketing strategies using advertising, media, direct mail, and other printed material, broadcast outlets and mailing lists; overseeing the production of the materials specified in marketing plans and calendars; consulting with product and/or program development; developing budgets; and maintaining good working relations with the news media.
Specific tasks include updating the Press website; sustaining and monitoring the accuracy of Press datafeeds to the book industry; preparing and submitting product descriptions and images to e-retailers such as; managing the prepublication creation and distribution of digital copies of forthcoming books; planning, designing, and executing direct-approach sales campaigns; researching and maintaining lists of possible purchasers and reviewers; planning and coordinating exhibits; creating, scheduling, and placing advertisements; and researching and submitting Press books for appropriate awards. The position also requires ad hoc participation in special marketing programs as necessary.
The position requirements include a bachelor's degree or higher in the arts and sciences, especially the humanities or social sciences, or in a relevant pre-professional program (business, communication, journalism, or law) and one year's experience in public relations or marketing for a serious public service entity, such as a university or college, museum, large library, or arts program. Especially desirable is experience in book publishing, preferably in the marketing department of a scholarly or academic publisher.
It is vital that the Marketing Coordinator have polished verbal and written language skills to effectively communicate with fellow professionals and with scholars, both in person and in writing. The ability to prioritize and accomplish numerous tasks simultaneously and the ability to work independently and within deadlines are required. A calm, professional demeanor is required to handle the broad range of situations encountered in the public exhibit environment and in business transactions.
Overnight travel will be required on occasion (once or twice a year) and driving to and from nearby cities will be as well (two to four times per year, on average). Applicants must be able to erect and dismantle exhibits in off-site locations and have the ability to lift and maneuver books of books and materials is required; such boxes may weigh thirty (30) pounds.
