Gerry Howard Retires from Doubleday

Gerry Howard, v-p and executive editor at Doubleday, will leave the publisher at the end of this year after a 46-year career in publishing. Howard is a recipient of the Maxwell E. Perkins Award and the editor of such authors as Paul Auster, Kevin Barry, Bill Bryson, William S. Burroughs, Don DeLillo, Roger Ebert, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Chrissie Hynde, Quincy Jones, Sam Lipsyte, Marc Maron, Walter Mosley, Chuck Palahniuk, David Foster Wallace, Irvine Welsh, and Hanya Yanagihara, among many others.

Howard began his publishing career as a promotional copywriter in the textbook department of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, then headed into editorial at New American Library, working on paperbacks, before moving to Viking Penguin, then Norton and, in 1998, to Doubleday. There, he served as editor-in-chief of Anchor and, later, Broadway, before assuming his present role in 2006.

Howard is working on a biography of the legendary editor Malcolm Cowley for Penguin Press, "which, amusingly to some of us," Doubleday publisher and editor-in-chief Bill Thomas wrote in a letter to staff, "is overdue."
