Gabriela Baeza Ventura Up at Arte Público Press

Arte Público Press has promoted longtime executive editor Gabriela Baeza Ventura to deputy director in what director Nicolás Kanellos called “a long-overdue recognition of her dedication and commitment to the work of Hispanic writers.” Her promotion comes just weeks after the press, which is the oldest and largest publisher of Hispanic literature in the U.S., received a $500,000 grant from the BIPOC Arts Network & Fund.

Baeza Ventura began working for the press as a research assistant while studying for her doctorate in Spanish at the University of Houston, which she completed in 2001. Now an associate professor of U.S. Latino literature at the university, she became the full-time managing editor at Arte Público in 1999, and was promoted to executive editor in 2000.

Baeza Ventura is a board member of a number of organizations and publications, including Diálogo and the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Program. She is also codirector, with  Carolina Villarroel, of the U.S. Latino Digital Humanities Center.
