Gibbs Smith Announces Shift to Employee Ownership

Gibbs Smith announced that its employees will now become owners under an Employment Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). As of Monday, employees own 50% of the stock, with the future goal to become 100% employee owned.

Founded by Gibbs Smith and his wife Catherine, the independent publishing company has had many successes of late, with brands like BabyLit, Pocketdoodles, 101 Things to do With, as well as a James Beard cookbook and the home reference and gift line. It also includes the award-winning Gibbs Smith Education imprint, which publishes print and digital programs to support state and national history curricula around the country.
 
The management of the company will continue under Gibbs Smith, founder & president; Suzanne Taylor, trade publisher and CCO; Brad Farmer, CEO; Madge Baird, managing editor; and Charlene Kerwin, education publisher.
