When My Baby Dreams

Adele Enersen. HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray, $14.99 (48p) ISBN 978-0-06-207175-0

This book’s cover photo of a cherubic infant, aloft on a crescent moon, brings to mind Anne Geddes’s sentimental photography. In a project derived from her popular photo-blog, first-time author Enersen offers a less precious, though still whimsical, take on baby pictures. Closer inspection reveals that the moon is loosely shaped from fabric, and the night sky is a carpet on which the baby sleeps. Enersen introduces readers to her daughter, Mila, and explains, “These are Mila’s dreams.” She costumes Mila in thematic onesies, plunks the cooperative (and sleeping) model on the rug, and crafts reveries from clothing and household items. “When my baby dreams of traveling the world, she starts her journey on the back of an Indian elephant,” Enersen writes, picturing Mila aboard a blue cardigan with one sleeve as the pachyderm’s trunk. Fringed green blankets become fields, pink scarves serve as superhero capes or fluffy parachutes, and a paper plate, circling Mila’s head, turns her into an astronaut. Enersen, with rare postpartum energy, pays affectionate tribute to Mila and suggests DIY ideas for other adoring parents. Up to age 5. (Jan.)
