Taking Off
Joanne E. Bernstein. HarperCollins Publishers, $3.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-06-446047-7
Only by the Trophy designation would readers know that this is a book for kids, because the cover doesn't give it away. And that's probably just the reason teenagers might pick up this little bundle of information, a book packed full of tips for traveling by air, by road, on foot, by bike or in cars. Bernstein's tone is no-nonsense when she comes to such matters as hitchhiking (she is against the practice), getting lost, carrying identification and handling money. She offers abundant advice on everything from initial list-making to final packing. Included are directories of American Express offices, youth hostels and other helpful addresses. Perhaps the only thing lacking here is a chapter telling teenagers how to persuade their parents to finance the trip! (12-up)
