The Trial of Anna Cotman

Anna isn't sure how she feels about the Society of Masks, a secret club that her new friend Lindy has persuaded her to join. The members' masks and robes seem silly: Anna sees through the disguises to the boys' real identities. But Anna is lonely, and besides, she is intrigued by Lindy's handsome brother Jeremy, known as the Goldmaster. Everything changes when the Yellow Lord joins the club; younger boys are recruited and the initiation rites become dangerous and sometimes illegal. The Society turns against Anna and what was once little more than a game becomes a frightening contest. Whether read as a parable of the rise of fascism or merely as a fast-paced suspense story, this novel will leave readers with a great deal to think about.
