A Plant Called Spot

Nancy J. Peteraf, Author, Lillian Hoban, Illustrator Doubleday Books for Young Readers $13.95 (1p) ISBN 978-0-385-30885-4
Expressive, pastel-colored drawings and a simple, repetitive text convey the story of Teddy, who longs to have a pet of his own. Teddy's family already has a dog, a cat and a rabbit, but the animals avoid Teddy because he mistreats them. Finally, Teddy's mother buys him a plant. ``You don't look like a very good pet to me,'' Teddy says hesitantly. ``But since you're all my mother will let me have, I think I'll name you Spot.'' As Teddy begins to care for Spot, he also learns how to appreciate his pets and to treat them with tenderness; by the time Spot has bloomed, so has Teddy. Hoban's sweet-natured illustrations add humor to Peteraf's first book, which--a little chirpily--reminds children that all living things need care and respect. Ages 4-7. (Apr.)
