There's a Square

Mary Serfozo. Scholastic, $6.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-590-54426-9

Geared to board-book graduates, the latest in the Story Corner series takes on the basics of shapes. Serfozo's (Who Said Red?) streamlined rhyming text invites readers to look closely at the art (""An oval, you know, looks a lot like an O. / Here's a great oval show!""); its perky rhythms form a sturdy springboard for Carter's (How Many Bugs in a Box?) typically offbeat cut-out creations. Depicted in sunny yet subtle contemporary hues, stick-limbed triangular tots play near a geodesic jungle gym; a circle mom and her two little dots gaze out with round, permanently astonished expressions. If not as unfettered as many Carter confections, it is nonetheless a spot-on preschool pleaser. Ages 2-4. (Feb.)
