Where We Sleep

Nancy Tafuri. Greenwillow Books, $3.95 (10pp) ISBN 978-0-688-07189-9

Two of these three board books by the Caldecott Honor-winner are among the best of the genre. My Friends shows that ""bunnies, a fawn, a puppy . . . are babies just like me!'' Where We Sleep tells the very young that ``bunnies have burrows, fawns have thickets . . . cubs have dens . . . and I have a crib!'' The concept behind them is clear and eloquent; children will delight in this game of linking relationships. In a Red House continues an overall theme of a child's perspective of the world, but it adds up to little more than a genial listing of colors: ``Pink bunny and a gray truck are all in my own blue room!'' Large, all-cap typeface has the unfortunate effect of ``screaming'' the text; it doesn't match the understated tone of these companionable books. Ages 9 months-3 years. (September)
