Changeling Moon

Dani Harper. Kensington/Brava, $14 trade paper (386p) ISBN 978-0-7582-6514-2

Harper (Heart of the Winter Wolf) debuts a well-conceived shape-shifter series set in a small Canadian town. When Bernie Gervais, a crazed lone werewolf, attacks newspaper editor Zoey Tyler, local vet Connor Macleod, a member of the local Changeling pack, tries to neutralize the old drunk's shape-shifting ability and prevent Zoey's transformation at the next full moon. But Bernie has already set a nasty plan into motion to destroy Connor with the help of a paranormal investigator from a cable TV show, and now he hungers for Zoey's blood and psychic power as well. Harper has laid sturdy groundwork for a lengthy series through smooth writing, consistent world-building, and an attractive lead couple whose preternatural bonding creates a strong sense of romanticism, and there are plenty of Macleod relatives to populate the planned sequels.
