Two Times as Hot

Cat Johnson. Kensington/Brava, $9.95 trade paper (304p) ISBN 978-0-7582-8540-9

Johnson cleverly pulls readers back into the Oklahoma Nights contemporary western series setting by retelling the set-up of the first book, One Night with a Cowboy, from the point of view of Emma Hart, sister of One Night heroine Becca. Ten months later, New York graphic designer Emma is back in Oklahoma for Becca’s wedding and instantly falls in lust with Lt. Col. Logan Hunt, who runs O.S.U.’s ROTC program. Hooking up isn’t easy, between a younger woman chasing after Logan’s attention and Emma’s spur-of-the-moment date with a cowboy, but they manage to slip away for a one-night stand of hot sex. Then Emma goes back to N.Y., and Logan goes by his folks’ home and learns his father’s had a stroke. Johnson finds an impressively fresh way to treat the predictable outcome of that wild night. Her dialogue lilts off the tongue, and her earlier characters continue developing alongside Emma and Logan, keeping returning readers engaged. Johnson’s fans will be looking forward to the next in the series. (Oct.)
