Joe on Sunday

Tony Blundell, Blundell. Dial Books, $10.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-8037-0446-6

On Monday morning, when Joe's mom goes to his room to wake him up, she finds . . . a pig in Joe's bed! The pig proceeds to stuff himself into Joe's clothes, gobble up Joe's and his dad's breakfast, roll in the mud and generally wreak havoc. Things aren't much better on Tuesday, when Joe's mom finds a lion in his bed, or on Wednesday when a mouse comes to call, or on Thursday when a monkey juggles Joe's breakfast, or on Friday when a monster eats up all of Joe's clothes, or on Saturday when a bossy, grumbling king takes command of the household. On Sunday, however, Joe is back. Though this book is slightly repetitious for older readers, it should provide nonstop fun for younger children. The wacky approach appeals directly to the imagination, and cartoony, action-packed illustrations move the week briskly along. Ages 3-7. (September)
