Still Restless

Jan Hettinga. Kregel, $14.99 trade paper (176p) ISBN 978-0-8254-4390-9

Hettinga, pastor at Cascade Church in Monroe, Wash., tells stories that are rich in dialogue, including conversations with inmates and families dealing with early pregnancy, marital strife, and other complicated faith and ethical-based troubles. He argues that these troubles are best resolved by engaging in intimate dialogue with Christ. Hettinga explores many of the one-on-one conversations reported in the gospels, framing Christ's teachings not as a monolithic set of values, but as individualized lessons that are tailored to each specific case. Hettinga avoids a specific formula for salvation, but he does include a numbered list for a "Fresh Start with God" and discussion questions for each chapter. Although the book does not build an apologetic case for Christianity, those convinced of Christ's infallibility will find Hettinga's story-driven account a stirring call for letting go of a self-centered life.
