The Boys I Didn't Kiss and Other Essays

Kathleen Rockwell Lawrence. British American Publishing, $17.95 (210pp) ISBN 978-0-945167-34-1

The pieces collected here, reprinted from Vogue , Woman's Day , the New York Times , etc., reveal Lawrence ( Maud Gonesp ok ) at her satiric best, exposing pretentious types she has watched closely during the confused 1980s. But in certain essays, she expresses love and empathy with fellow humans, particularly her young daughter who, despite being raised in a Catholic home, thinks she is Jewish and proudly sings Passover and Hanukkah songs she learned at a Jewish nursery school. And in ``Jeanne Robert Foster,'' Lawrence questions why such a major literary force is largely forgotten. When she died in 1970, poet Foster, she notes, was described in a New York Times obituary as ``a leading figure in international literary circles from 1910 to 1930.'' (Oct.)
