Mood: Interiors & Inspiration

Anne Hepfer. Gibbs Smith, $60 (320p) ISBN 978-1-4236-6151-1

Designer Hepfer opens the door to the “many moods” a home can reflect in her lavish debut. As she writes, “We live in a stressed-out, fast-paced world.... To create a meaningful home, we must examine how we want to feel.” Her tour starts with bright, colorful “happy rooms” in her own home, which are “among [her] favorite to design.” “Relaxed” spaces feature in her mountain cottage that’s full of natural light, while a “cozy” Victorian revival in Toronto “celebrate[s] the simple pleasures... inspired by the Danish concept of Hygge,” and an apartment makes use of “sumptuous fabrics” like velvet and animal prints to demonstrate that “sexy doesn’t have to mean dark and moody.” Hepfer also recounts the inspiration she’s found in her international travels: in Colombia, “colonial chic meets Caribbean flair,” while in Italy, she loved “deep blues of the sea, the zingy yellow of lemons, and the attention to artisanship.” Mood-specific foods and playlists appear throughout: “tranquil” gets a “calming chia pudding,” while “nostalgic” readers can sip a vodka southside and listen to Joni Mitchell. Hepfer keeps things playful, fun, and personal. Armchair designers will eat this up. (Sept.)
