Bryn Donovan. Harlequin/Carina, $5.99 e-book (235p) ISBN 978-1-4268-9450-3

Donovan (An Experienced Mistress) writes an intriguing haunted house tale with spine-tingling suspense and an emotionally fraught romance. David Girard plans to sell his inherited family mansion to escape its curse. Contractor Andi Petrowski needs the gig refurbishing the historic house, so she dismisses its evil aura. Not easily dismissed is the attraction to David, who’s fascinated by her even as he engages in erratic behavior to scare her away. The relationship turns intimate, leading to conversations about deeply disturbing secrets and childhood hallucinations. Meanwhile, the house gets bolder and turns violent. Friendly ghosts, an ex-priest turned psychic, and an unexpected confession provide the ammunition for Andi to realize her psychic gifts and lift the curse from David’s shoulders so they can battle the house’s demons together. Andi is a snappy, spunky character and easy to root for. At times the dialogue feels stilted, but the strong story and pacing will have broad appeal. (Oct.)
