We’re Happy You’re Here

In an inclusive epistolary debut that traces a child’s beginnings from abstract idea to flesh-and-blood infant, Wilkins begins, “Dear Small Human,/ Many special people did/ many special things for you/ to be here today.” Pages show people wishing, hoping, dreaming, organizing and planning, and preparing “for our big moment in your story.” Sato’s light-filled, desaturated digital illustrations visualize figures of various abilities, ages, body types, family structures, gender presentations, religions, and skin tones preparing for a new arrival of their own. Acknowledging the wait that occurs via “our brains and hearts (and a few other parts)” as well as “a perfect mix of science, wisdom and love,” the welcoming pages open up to a group setting filled with families and young children, wholeheartedly communicating that “we’re happy you’re here.” Discussion questions about “your story” and an author’s note conclude.
