Mama’s Pajamas

Mara Van Fleet. S&S/Wiseman, $15.99 (12p) ISBN 978-1-4814-7975-2

In this charming touch-and-feel board book, which emphasizes color identification, two smiling siblings show off their costumelike pajamas. “Our mama makes pajamas/ for my brother and me,/ and each night we choose/ who we want to be,” begins Van Fleet (Night-Night, Princess), whose simple rhymes suit the book’s bedtime setting. Textural embellishments make the already enviable outfits even more enticing: the boy’s dragon pajamas have bumpy green spines, the girl’s fox pajamas feature a bushy red tail, and her bunny pajamas have fuzzy pink ears. After putting on matching sets of sheep pjs (“They’re cuddly and cozy/ and make us both sleepy”), the toddlers are tucked into bed by their talented seamstress mother. Fair warning to parents: readers might begin to take issue with their standard-issue pajamas and demand more fanciful bedtime apparel. Up to age 4. (May)
