Profiler Connor Quinn leaves police work for news photography just as the Puppetmaster, a serial killer, begins to terrorize Florida's Tampa Bay. When Connor's old boss begs for help, promising the newspaper an exclusive on the breaking story, he reluctantly agrees. His only outlet is his cyber-sweetheart, Katydid, who unknown to him is actually his colleague Kate Devane. Kate's got her own problems: guilt for divorcing her abusive schizophrenic institutionalized husband and guilt because she knows Connor is her Internet lover. Now they find themselves thrown together in real life, assigned to cover the murders even as the killer stalks them both. Lee (A Fateful Choice) muddies her storyline with one too many stalkers, but this is a suspenseful, edge-of-the-seat read. (Nov.)
