This ""mildly modernized"" edition presents one of Francis de Sales's masterpieces in an accessible format. The 17th-century Geneva bishop's treatise on God's love has been paraphrased and shortened from 12 long books into 12 short chapters ""while attempting to remain true"" to the original's ""character and...content."" Whereas de Sales's ""Introduction to the Devout Life"" was written for a popular audience and has been translated many times, this book was ""geared more toward an educated and experienced readership"" and has not been so widely reproduced. De Sales said he wrote the book ""for those who want to move beyond elementary spirituality,"" and some of the concepts it contains are not easy.
