Peekaboo Pals Opposites

Becky Davies, illus. by Gareth Lucas. Silver Dolphin, $14.95 (20p) ISBN 978-1-62686-522-8

In this third title in the Peekaboo Pals lift-the-flap series, Davies and Lucas take readers to a playground, gymnasium, ocean, circus, and other diverse settings as a playful cast of anthropomorphic animals demonstrates more than 20 opposing ideas. Several large flaps, one for each word pair, are incorporated into each spread; fittingly, there’s a “before and after” aspect to many of the scenarios pictured. Out on an ice floe, a mouse uses a hair dryer to take a woolly mammoth from “frozen” to “melted,” and lifting a flap featuring a “hairy” lion reveals an unhappily “bald” feline after a barber has finished his job. Entertaining details in Lucas’s digital cartoons and pithy speech balloon quips scattered throughout make this a playful primer that readers can enjoy fast or slow. Ages 3–up. (Aug.)
