The Unseen

Lilla Glass. City Owl, $4.99 e-book (263) ISBN 978-1-64898-394-8

Glass takes a cue from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows in her enjoyable romantasy debut and Reel of Rhysia series launch. The talented thief Elwyn always keeps to the shadows, determined to go unseen. After a failed heist she lies low by working as a barmaid in the sleepy town of Amblewick with her trusty dagger, Gelah, as her only companion. Then the ruthless assassin Brannon tracks her down with a job offer: there’s a powerful and mysterious object locked within nearby Devlin Manor, something that is connected to the fairy myth of the Unseen and that poses a serious threat to the Seelie Court that presides over the fae. Intrigued by the mystery, and the promised reward money, Elwyn gives up the quiet life for one final mission, working together with Brannon, unruly Prince Aedyn, and a young girl named Lydia who’s battling her own monsters. When the job goes awry, however, it’s on this misfit team to save multiple worlds. An abundance of fantasy terminology can make it difficult to orient oneself in Glass’s fae world, but the rollicking heist plot still offers plenty of entertainment. Fans of underdog heroes will be especially pleased. (July)
