What Do You Love About You?

Karen Lechelt. Bloomsbury, $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-68119-093-8

A girl with tan skin and a bobbed haircut asks the question of the title to various well-dressed animals in Lechelt's debut children's book, which tacitly invites readers to mull over self-affirmations of their own. Because the same font is used for both the questions and answers, it isn't instantly apparent that the animals are responding to each question, and the reasoning behind their answers can be a little fuzzy ("I love my neck because we can touch the stars," offers a giraffe dressed in a sweater and slacks). Eventually, the girl reveals that "I love my... self," though there isn't much sense of what led her to that conclusion, one that's oddly vague compared to the statements the animals offered.
