Age Matters

Enjelicious. Webtoon Unscrolled, $19.99 trade paper (368p) ISBN 978-1-998854-28-8

Enjelicious’s unpolished yet charming debut collects her hit webtoon romance of the same name. Rose Choi, an overworked office drone nearing her 30th birthday, rolls her eyes at news stories about 23-year-old Yoon Daniel, whose social media app Lime has made him the world’s youngest billionaire. “Young, successful, important,” Rose groans. “Everything I’m not.” He’s also hot, but when Rose fills in for a friend who’s been running errands for the reclusive entrepreneur, she fails at first to recognize Korea’s most eligible bachelor. This sets up a snarky dynamic between the aloof, driven, secretly immature Yoon and the scattered but sensible Rose. She kills cockroaches for Yoon (“Calm down you wuss!!!”), teaches him self-care, and alternately protects and challenges him as he ventures out into the world. The generic rom-manga artwork gets across Rose’s sassy personality and Yoon’s sex appeal, but it’s not distinctive or artful, with characters often stiffly posed. Nonetheless, the duo’s prickly interactions spark plenty of romantic heat—even if Rose’s insistence that she’s an old maid at 29 gets old much faster than she does. Genre fans will likely overlook the series’ growing pains and look forward to seeing Rose and Yoon’s relationship mature. (Jan.)
