Hans in Luck: Seven Stories by the Brothers Grimm

Felix Hoffmann. NorthSouth, $30 (256p) ISBN 978-0-7358-4281-6

Long out of print, Hoffmann’s versions of seven Grimm tales return in a handsome compendium that also highlights how his artwork developed over his career (the stories were originally published separately in Switzerland between 1949 and 1975). Hoffmann’s “Rapunzel” is dark and foreboding; the sorceress who claims the newborn child is swathed in black robes, and the prince who discovers Rapunzel has the bearing of a Grecian statue. His “The Seven Ravens” is set in the 1960s, with a girl going to the literal ends of the Earth to rescue her brothers, who have been transformed into birds. In the title story, the most playful in the bunch, bright cartoons follow Hans through a series of less-than-wise trades. A welcome introduction to an acclaimed Swiss artist whose work will be new to many young readers. Ages 4–8. (Sept.)
