Barron’s Totally Wild Fact-Packed, Fold-Out Animal Atlas

Jen Green, illus. by Christiane Engel. Barron’s, $18.99 (56p) ISBN 978-0-7641-6808-6

Green and Engel follow their 2014 atlas with an animal-themed tour of the world, and a large foldout map greets readers when they open the book. While the foldout adds little beyond serving as a table of contents, the information that follows is more robust—small photographs of animals dot the landscapes of Earth’s continents while snapshot-like photos, bulleted lists, and other sidebars introduce details about hundreds of animals, including the resurgence of the once-endangered Arabian oryx and the migratory habits of antelope, zebra, and wildebeest in the Serengeti. Foldout spreads offer maps color-coded to reveal the continents’ biomes and landscapes, and Antarctic and oceanic animals are also explored. Though not an in-depth exploration of the Earth or its creatures, the variety and quantity of animal facts included should keep many readers engaged. Ages 8–12. (Oct.)
