E.X.O.: The Legend of Wale Williams, Part 2

Roye Okupe and Sunkanmi Akinboye. Youneek Studios, $14.99 trade paper (148p) ISBN 978-0-9966070-3-2

The second chapter of the Legend of Wale Williams, a superhero in an Iron Man–like power suit, delves deeper into the complicated relationships that characterized the first book, and explains the properties and powers of the E.X.O. suit. The outline of the story is familiar: Williams hones his abilities and eventually must combat the supervillain Oniku, whose army of faceless drone soldiers attacks Lagoon City, Nigeria. But what should be a brisk action adventure is often bogged down by loads of exposition. These sections of lengthy, textbook detail, which constitute a significant chunk of the book, drag the pacing to dead stop. E.X.O. is clearly a passion project to create a superhero for Nigeria, and writer Okupe’s love of American comics is palpable on every page. But right now it’s too by-the-numbers to be a successful superhero story in its own right. [em](BookLife) [/em]
