Ride the Storm

Karen Chance. Berkley, $7.99 mass market (608p) ISBN 978-1-101-98998-2

Chance’s fun eighth Cassie Palmer urban fantasy novel picks up where Reap the Wind left off. Cassie Palmer, aka the hapless seer Pythia, is still trying to find (and save) her friend John Pritkin (who’s the son of a demon) and she has a lot of other things on her plate. Time hopping takes a lot out of a person, and the universe seems to be out to get her. She contemplates an opportunity to explore her attraction to Pritkin while learning some painful secrets from her past. Additionally, reporters are trying to blackmail Cassie into telling her story; there are rampaging origami animals in the casino where she lives; a war mage decides to hold her acolyte, Rhea Silvanus, hostage; and there are pitched battles right out of the Middle Ages. It’s all a bit exhausting to keep up with, but Chance’s imagination knows no bounds, and fans will find a lot to love in her blend of epic action with private drama. (Aug.)
